Having seen Smallfin Clingfish at Ricketts Point yesterday, we headed to the pier at the Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron. Right now, there are Seagrass Clingfish galore to be seen snorkelling at Beaumaris. They are in the small weed and seagrass all within metres of the pier – look carefully They are bright green and some of them are quite tiny. There are also lots of juvenile Widebody Pipefish, some no bigger than a hair. Plus, Pygmy Squid beneath weed in the shallowest places. All up we only swam an area about 30 x 30 m and saw lots of really cool critters.
There are always Bigbelly Seahorses to be seen snorkelling at Beaumaris. They are mostly living beneath the pier. There are also lots of Tasmanian Blennies, including ones that live in the pipes in the pier pylons. While you’re photographing these, you might be attacked by the Trident Gobies that are common about the seafloor. Also look out for snapping shrimp cleaning out their burrows under the rocks.
