The most valued of my possessions is a pair of high-quality binoculars I bought in 1996 with my first pay cheque after I left university. They cost the equivalent of about £1,000 in today’s money and with a lifetime warranty have enabled me to see countless thousands of birds, mammals, whales and dolphins, landscapes and insects. They’ve done more to connect me with nature than any other purchase, and they don’t plug into the internet, they don’t need charging and they are still optically outstanding after thirty years.
