Complex systems dilemma

by simon

That systems such as ecosystems are so complicated, that there may be a practically infinite number of overlapping mechanisms. Scientists who try to study the mechanisms have to make arbitrary decisions about what minutia to study and in doing so, miss the bigger picture. The mechanisms inside complex systems such as ecosystems also change over time, meaning these compartmentalised results can become quickly outdated.
