I always find it remarkable how different the assemblage of animals is between swims. We were in Blairgowrie very recently and saw lots of different nudibranchs. Today there were just a few of the usual cast including the splendid Vercoe’s nudibranch. We also searched for pygmy squid that are usually easy to find but could find none. The squat lobsters were out in abundance though; so too were hermit crabs of several species. We saw two common dragonets but no southern velvetfish at all. Weedfish seemed to be everywhere.
This is one of the nice things about this site. It’s ever changing. The storms of the last few weeks seem to have completely altered the seafloor. Fresh sediment has fallen. There are new patches of drift algae, area of bare shell grit and canyons through newly formed sand banks. The habitat is so dynamic that it almost always presents something new and surprising.
